melk abbey simplicity

Melk Abbey by SAL
The Melk Abbey in Austria is a phenomenal building located at the top of a gorgeous hill overlooking the city and river valley below. The Abbey was constructed between 1702 and 1736 by Jakob Prandtauer. Having visited this remarkable structure as an architecture student, I snapped a photo of this Baroque corner.

If you know anything about this building and Baroque architecture in general, it is absolutely about an ornate as you can imagine. On the backside of the building, we see a simplistic facade with an ingenious corner carved out.

I spotted this corner and wanted to keep an image because I believe all architecture is worthy of careful details that add so much character to the building, not to the budget. Even the slight bulge underneath each window, the beautiful cornice and base stones on the building add a great deal of simple elegance.

  1. Very good point about having to think about ever part of the building while designing. This building looks like it cut corners, literally, but not in terms of money! LOL!!!
